Endoscopy during Pregnancy

  • – The safety of endoscopy during pregnancy is not completely established but it is performed routinely if there is a clear indication

 

  • Specific Contraindications:
  •  – Imminent/Threatened delivery
  •  – Ruptured membrane
  •  – Placental abruption
  •  – Pregnancy induced HTN

 

  • Precautions:
  • – Pregnant women should receive supplemental oxygen during the procedure with continuous oxygen saturation monitoring
  • – ERCP should be done by expert endoscopist
  • – Benzodiazepines should be avoided as it causes fetal malformation
  • – Lactating patients are advised to avoid  breast feeding and discard breast milk for 4 hours after a procedure requiringsedation
